Malin's new keel!

The great improvement of Malin this winter is to rebuild the keel. The other day Malin was moved indoors and work on the keel can begin. A lot of thoughts and calculations are behind the design of the keel we finally selected and we have collaborated with Farr Yacht Design.

Below is a model of the new keel (blue) and the old (red).

Here are Patrik's thoughts about the new keel.

Same RM (Reating Moment) and the same displacement. We reduce in depth by about 5 cm and the boat gets a deep around 2.19 m instead of 2.24 m as today. We and the expertise we have used believe that our current keel has had poor properties at low speed on crosses, great angle of attack and in the cup. It is supported by our empiricism. With the new bulb, we hope to get rid of the weak records and also get a slight improvement in other wind forces and angles. We also make a small update ofthe profile on the fin.  In conclusion, the keel becomes more "middle of the road" which I hope will be good when Malin will work for many years to come and in several different measurement rules.

Yesterday, measurements and preparations were made on the queues for it to be cut off to make way for the new bulb – at the lower line the keel will be cut off.
