Winter's big job and improvement to rebuild Malin's keel is now ready (only a little painting high up left). We feel very happy with the result and hope of course that the feeling is the same when we start sailing.
Here we will describe a little what has been done. How Patrik says about the end result:
Thanks to a lower centre of gravity, the keel gives the same rattling torque as before with about 7 centimeters less profound and a slightly lower weight. Overall, we expect the boat to be just over 100 kg lighter (50 kg lighter in foreships and 10 kg in the aft ship). The goal is to get the boat all-round and in the middle in all respects in all the measurement rules. In Malin's previous configuration with the higher rig (which we still have), genoa, Heavier keel than original and 2.24 m in depth, we felt that we paid for a sail surface and a deep as her displacing hull with a waterline length of about 9.20 could not really benefit from.
First, a model of the current keel and what we wanted to achieve.
This is what the keel looked like before we started.
Here we have set up the old keel.
Time to cut off the lower part where the new bulb will sit.
Plan and grind, plan and grind... indefinitely...
The bulb finished and checks if it will fit – which it does of course.
Bulben finally in place...
When you think you're done yes then it turns out you're not – just to redo and do the right thing.
Finally ready! We think it's going to be quick.
Front.
From the side (a little painting left).
We would like to thank Plastic Damage & Montage at Svinninge with Niklas (below) and his team for as usual a very good job and everyone else (Farr Yacht Design and others) we had the help of the rebuilding of the keel!
