Season premiere at Primo Cup

The last few days we have been in Monaco sailing the Primo Cup, which is the biggest race for the J/70 class during the winter, at one of the most prestigious sailing clubs in the world: the Yacht Club de Monaco. 72 participants from 15 nations. This was the first race that the semi-new J/70 team sailed together. Emil Forsgren is new in the trim position and Tomas Movin is new in the tactician/mainsheet position. Remaining from the previous season is Thomas Tennström on foredeck and of course Patrik Forsgren as helmsman. The race was meant to be a run-through before the season and to feel the waters before the World Championships in October.

We arrived on Wednesday, launched and had some great training sessions on the water. Much needed when Tomas had only spent one day in a J/70 before. Already now we realized that this would be a tough regatta given the light, shifty wind in combination with the extreme wave size.

Day 1 of the regatta offered light winds from the east-southeast, which later in the day shifted to the south. And BIG waves from a slightly different direction than the wind direction that made it very difficult to keep the boat moving. The first start we started close to the starter and got off to a good start and were able to pick our own track. Despite the difficult conditions, we felt we had okay boat speed and were hanging on well at the top. But we messed up at the first cruising mark and lost about 15-20 boats. The wind died down, the course shortened and we finished 46th. The second race of the day we started on the leeward side and got a very good start and were able to beat the field. We rounded the first tick mark in 15th, made a good leg and sailed our way up to 10th place. The second leg we did almost even better than the first and rounded fifth before the last leg. During the last leg the wind dropped again and we unfortunately dropped to 15th place. But now we knew that if we get away well at the start, we will catch the top boats. Very good feeling.'

Day 2 is spent almost all day on land. And then the Yacht Club de Monaco is a very nice place to be. At the end of the day, the race committee sent us out on the water and two start attempts were made before the AP over A flags were raised and we were sent ashore again. In the evening there was the regatta dinner, "Pasta Party", where we were served a pasta buffet, charcuterie buffet and dessert buffet with highlights from the Italian and French cuisine.

Day 3 We managed to get three races together with a good wind from the north, even though the forecasts predicted almost no wind at all, which was great fun. The first race was our worst sailing of the regatta with a bad start and going to the wrong edge. 51st place at the finish. In the second and third races of the day we finished 20th and 17th respectively after relatively good starts and smart route choices.

We finished the competition in 30th place out of 72. A good result considering this was our first competition together and that the best in the world were for training for the World Championships. We would like to congratulate the winners and thank the organizers.

During the competition, robot badges were used, which we thought was a bit cool. Also a very funny sight when 72 boats are chasing and trying to ping for the starting line's lane mark as it drives away after a button press on an iPad on the starting ship. Now the boat is heading back to Saltis but already next week Thursday the team flies to Montenegro to sail the Montenegro Sprint Cup.

Pontus Dahl - New in Team Pro4u

Here is a presentation (see below) of our latest and last new regular member of Team Pro4u "Malin". Again a person with a solid and long sailing background. Pontus will take a pre-sail trim position on board. Few people in the team come in with a track record like Pontus has, he has among other things won JNM in both optimist and E- dinghy as well as JSM, JEM and JVM in Zoom8.

  1. Who are you?
  • My name is Pontus Dahl, I am 26 years old and from this year I will be sailing headsail trim on board Team Pro4u. I have spent a large part of my life on the Baggensfjärden sailing for my mother club Boo Segelsällskap (BOOSS). I am a proud boat owner of an Albin Cumulus (as you can see in the picture), together with my brother.
  1. What is your sailing background?
  • Like many, my sailing background is mainly in dinghy sailing with Optimist, Zoom8 and E- dinghy. In the meantime, but mainly after my dinghy venture, I have also been a coach for the national youth team in Optimist.
  1. Why are you joining Team Pro4u?
  • I saw it as a great opportunity to get back into competitive sailing and in a format I've never sailed before. It's a great opportunity to sail with such a great and ambitious team.
  1. What do you hope to achieve by sailing with Team Pro4u?
  • My first sub-goal is to get into my position on board Malin as well as possible. I'd still dare to call myself quick-witted and curious, so I intend to take advantage of that. Then Team Pro4u has clear goals that I really stand behind, to stand at the top of the podium when the World Championships are held in Kiel in 2023.
  1. Anything else you want to add?
  • Trust the process and have fun along the way is something that describes me quite well. The whole team shares a true joy for the sport and I hope that all of you reading this will join us on our journey! 🙂

Emil Alnebeck - New in Team Pro4u

Team Pro4u will reinforce the team with two regular members with a solid sailing background. We are now at full strength and the goal is that the team we have now will be intact for two seasons with a view to our big goal which is the World Championships in 2023. Here we present our new Keyboard and later our last addition will be presented.

  1. Who are you?

My name is Emil Alnebeck, I am 24 years old and from this year I will be sailing Keyboard on board Team Pro4u. Raised on the west coast with mother club Orrvikens Segelsällskap.

  1. What is your sailing background?

"Regular" dinghy races with Optimist, E- dinghy and 29er. This was followed by an elite effort in Laser which lasted until a few years ago. Attended the Sailing High School in Lerum. Sailed on Joint Venture in ORC class C in 2021.

  1. Why are you joining Team Pro4u?

Team Pro4u is probably the most ambitious ocean sailing team in the country, and perhaps in the Nordic countries. To be "schooled" in ocean sailing in that forum is a fantastic opportunity, and I'm really looking forward to the challenges it brings.

  1. What do you hope to achieve by sailing with Team Pro4u?

In 2022, my focus will be on getting my position right on board in manoeuvres and situations. In 2023, when the World Championships are held in Kiel, we hope to be the world's sharpest ocean sailing team in Class C.

  1. Anything else you want to add?

Between sailing sessions, chances are you'll find me on some mountain side or on the road bike 😊

Skiing in Ramundberget!

A bunch of current and former Team Pro4u members went to Ramundberget over the weekend for some skiing and to get together and have fun. It's becoming a nice tradition and it was the third time the gang went up and there will be more! Nice slopes, some people on the slopes and quite ok weather, the last day when it was too windy in Ramis so we went to Funäsdalsberget.

Obligatory video from the slalom hill below. Just the team on the slopes!

Nice dinner at Fjällgården on Saturday evening.

Sailcheck on North sails

Yesterday, part of the crew was at North doing an overhaul and service of our sails for the boats.

Many thanks North Sails and Martin for all the help!

Team Pro4u sums up the season

We're summing up the 2021 season and another great season for us! In terms of results, we have been on the podium in all this year's races with Malin, which shows stable sailing with a high minimum level. Some of this year's highlights with Malin:

  • We became Finnish champions for the first time.
  • Class two on Gotland Runt after a fantastic sailing
  • Amateur World Cup win (for the ninth time in a row at the European Championships and World Championships)
  • Third in the open class at the World Championships and only 3 points from the winner among 62 participants
  • North Sails ORCi cup win

We have also had a lot of fun in the team, a good mix of younger and older people and we have visited Helsinki and Tallinn.

See our summary for 2021 below (as video or to be downloaded).

Next season our big goal is the European Championship in Norway (and try to win the open class for the third time) and we also run sm, BOW in Tallinn and of course Gotland Runt mm. The parts of the team that run J/70 also continue their efforts with both the European Championship and the World Cup. Our long-term goal with Malin is since the World Championships in Kiel 2023 where we would of course very much like to win the gold when we have now been very close several times before.

We thank everyone who trained and raced with us, all competitors and organizers, our club KSSS all partners and especially our main sponsor Pro4u, pro4u.se. Thank you also to everyone who follows us and hope you will join us in the future also on our journey towards new goals!

Finally, we all wish a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Winner in henri lloyd frostbite challenge!

Over the weekend we in Team Pro4u have been down in Marstrand and sailed the Henri Lloyd FrostBite Challenge. There has been fresh wind between 7-12 m/s and lovely flattening conditions on the away winds. There have also been snowfalls, nice sailing conditions and good food.

This was the last race of the year and the result in the 8 completed sailings for us was 3, 2, (5), 2, 1, 1, 3, 1 with a net result of 13 p and the next boat had 23 p, which was incredibly fun for us! The full results list can be found here. We would like to thank all the sailors and organizers for a fantastic weekend

We would also like to thank everyone who has sailed with and towards us over the past year and so we hope to see you next year. In addition, we would also like to thank Pro4u and the other sponsors and partners who help and make this possible. This does not mean that we are closing down for the season but FrostBite was the last race of the year.

The preparations for next season are now underway!

We have now started training for next season, so far we have had two training sessions and another session is planned during December. It is mostly basics and maneuvers that we work on so that the new crew will learn their new roles and learn how to find on board the boat and for the others to refresh the memory.

All this takes place during the autumn at home at Baggen with varying weather and winds.
